California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) has long been a leader in innovative education, building on a 30-year legacy of preparing future leaders and strengthening communities. One shining example of this commitment is the CSUSM Aspiring Scholars Program, an inclusive, four-year university experience explicitly designed for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DDs). This groundbreaking program allows students to immerse themselves in the college experience, laying the foundation for a future of independence, personal growth, and career success.

An Inclusive Postsecondary Education (IPSE) Experience

The CSUSM Aspiring Scholars Program is a non-degree, four-year university program that offers students with I/DDs the chance to engage in diverse academic courses, vocational internships, independent living skills instruction, and campus-wide social activities. At the end of the program, participants receive a higher education career studies and skill development certificate, equipping them for competitive integrated employment in the community. This comprehensive approach ensures students gain valuable skills and knowledge and grow alongside their CSUSM peers, fostering a truly inclusive environment.

Dr. Rebecca Brooks, the Founder and Director of the Aspiring Scholars Program, shares her thoughts on the program's transformative impact: "Witnessing these young adults gain academic knowledge, vocational skills, and increased confidence as they navigate higher education has been incredible. Each student is deeply passionate about experiencing all aspects of college life to achieve their career aspirations. I'm so excited to see what their future holds."

Empowering Students with Support and Skills

One of the program’s greatest strengths is its focus on hands-on learning and real-world experience. Students participate in vocational internships and engage in activities that prepare them for the workforce. These experiences are enhanced through peer mentoring, where students receive one-on-one support to help them succeed academically and socially.

Tammy Tang, an Aspiring Scholars student, reflects on how the program has empowered her to grow: "I think the Aspiring Scholars program has helped me gain more independence. The program has given me exposure to fun school events. The peer mentors help students with homework, note-taking, and going to class. I went to the resume writing seminar. It talked about how to make your resume and how you can continue to add to it throughout your time at CSUSM. These are useful skills that I can use." This firsthand account highlights the program's comprehensive approach to education, focusing on academic learning and essential life and career skills.

Supporting Aspiring Scholars Through FDD Funding

The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD) is thrilled to partner with the CSUSM Aspiring Scholars Program to further its mission of empowering students with I/DDs. FDD is allocating funds to provide stipends for students during their vocational training and internships. These stipends will help students gain practical work experience and facilitate peer mentoring, ensuring each student receives the individualized support they need to thrive.

This collaboration exemplifies our shared commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive educational environments, equipping students with the skills and confidence to pursue their career aspirations. By providing these resources, we are investing in the future of these aspiring scholars and the positive impact they will undoubtedly make in their communities.

Building Brighter Futures Together

The CSUSM Aspiring Scholars Program is more than just an educational initiative; it is a pathway to independence, self-confidence, and lifelong success for students with I/DDs. With the support of FDD funding, the program will continue to provide invaluable opportunities and support to students as they navigate their college journey and prepare for their futures.
